Our retreats pair professional songwriters with veterans, military families and couples, and active-duty service members to write songs about their military experiences and transition home. These field recordings were recorded on-site at a SongwritingWith:Soldiers retreat and capture a song being performed just hours after it's been written, like a song capturing its first breath.

Mean It 03:09
MEAN IT Dan and Sharon Barr / Jay Clementi Look at our Love, it keeps getting better The good times and bad we grew up together I fly off the handle and you bring me down earth You lift me up so high, above the hurt This big old world is such a scary place You give everything to keep us safe I’ll always be the one that you can trust Beauty that’s what you deserve I said I’ll never give up on us and baby I meant every word I meant every word even when my compass, is dusty and broken It always points to you with a truth that goes unspoken We’re two halves meant to be whole Forever heart to heart connected soul to soul This big old world, is such a scary place But I’m not afraid, cause you’re my saving grace I’ll always be the one that you can trust Beauty that’s what you deserve I said I’ll never give up on us And baby I meant every word I am who I am because of you I can’t count all the times your love pulled me through I’ll always be the one that you can trust Beauty that’s what you deserve I said I’ll never give up on us And baby, I meant every word I meant every word I meant every word I mean every word

PLANTING SEEDS John and Lilliana Massimo / Trent Willmon A little while back we decided we needed a brand new start So we moved out of the mountains, bought ourselves a little farm Raising fresh tomatoes, and a bunch of kids and big ol patch green beans Who’d have thought you and me would be here now…. Planting seeds We’ve both seen our share of loss and struggle but we’re thankful for the hard times Took livin a lot o what we didn’t want, to find what we really wanted in life Everyday we try to be an example of what we want our kids to be It’s a whole lot like a garden… Planting seeds How to be strong, how to be calm, how show respect to each other and listen How To be careful with the words we’re sewing , cuz you’re gonna get it back and then some They’re putting down roots & growing, they’re looking up to you and me, It’s a whole lotta work but it sure is worth it, planting seeds Now to some it might seem outdated, it’s not what the world teaches these days Like opening a door for a lady, or standing up for what you believe Hard work and honesty, and trust and empathy, a little bit o’ chivalry We hope our kids will pass on it to theirs someday, so we’re planting seeds How to be strong, how to be calm, how show respect to each other and listen How To be careful with the words we’re sewing , cuz you’re gonna get it back and then some They’re putting down roots & growing, but they’re looking up to you and me, And it’s a whole lotta work but it sure is worth it, planting these seeds How to be strong, how to be calm, how show respect to each other and listen How To be careful with the words we’re sewing , cuz you’re gonna get it back and then some They’re putting down roots & growing, but they’re looking up to you and me, And it’s a whole lotta work but it sure is worth it, planting seeds Yeah they’re growing like weeds so it’s up to you and me, to keep on planting seeds! I’ll give you my all till the day I fall, baby planting seeds

Real Love 03:55
REAL LOVE David and Aspen Drewry / Trent Willmon Baby you don’t understand what you brought to man who’s always been Colorblind Your my every hue of spring, Red’s and blues and greens, and sunshine Baby when you’re around I’m not afraid be who I am unapologetically You’re my Roller coaster ride, rollin through all the lows and highs, Like a Bonfire in dark, a safe house for my broken heart You’re the only soul I trust, here’s to the future us Baby who’d a thought there was such a thing as real love Through all the lemon cars and lemon houses made of cards, we’re still makin lemonade Even on my darkest days it might be the only thing that I don’t overthink Instead of sayin “I do” we said “I reckon” I still love you as much as I love bacon You’re my Roller coaster ride, rollin through all the lows and highs, Like a Bonfire in dark, a safe house for my broken heart You’re the only soul I trust, here’s to the future us Who’d a thought there was such a thing as real love It’s unconditional, and guilt free, baby we might of fooled around and found the recipe Cause you’re my Roller coaster ride, rollin through all the lows and highs, You’re like a Bonfire in dark, a safe house for my broken heart You’re the only soul I trust, and here’s to the future us Baby who’d a thought there was such a thing as real love Baby who’d a thought there was such a thing as real love

NEVER BEEN SO SURE Wes and Rachel Woodward / Terry Radigan Every heartache Every mistake Every single tear Every misstep Every regret All those wasted years Led me to your door And I’ve never been so sure This is what love is for To walk beside you Always guide you Keep your dreams with mine Above the clouds Far from the crowds Baby how you shine I couldn’t love you more And I’ve never been so sure This is what life is for Cause every time I look at you I still have to catch Have to catch my breath And I just wanna spend My life Making you glad as I am That you said yes And forever i’ll be yours Cause I’ve never been so sure You are what it’s all for Every heartache Every mistake Led me to your door

Found 02:16
FOUND Angel and Jennifer Cruz / Terry Radigan A mother who was barely grown A father who was never home No one looking out for me Had to learn it on the streets I drank it down and smoked it up But I could never get enough Get enough to ease the pain Till I had enough And broke those chains And I dared to dream For something I had never seen A flash of hope When everything was up in smoke I picked myself up and learned to rise above and for the first time in my life I believed I could be loved And when I could finally trust my heart the missing piece the place to start He showed up at my door And something I ain’t ever felt before Now we both walked that broken road But that’s not how our story goes We write it each and every day When we fight for love And don’t walk away Yes I dared to dream For something I had never seen a flash of hope when everything was up in smoke I picked myself up and I learned to rise above And for the first time in my life I am truly loved I am truly loved

AFRAID OF THE TRUTH Kirby and Barbara Johnson / Jay Clementi There’s a wall between us so high, we built with fear, guilt and shame and pride We tried by ourselves, and we failed to tear it down We need to come together to knock it to the ground I want to know about your hurt I want to share your pain I know I can help you come out of the rain I’m in chains watching you drown In the darkness of the past Sometimes to move forward, we need to take a look back I’m here for you, I’m not afraid of the truth You are my heart, you can’t brake it, You are my strength baby I can take it Let’s walk together to that healing place I’ll be right here to wipe the tears from your face I want to know about your hurt I want to share your pain I know I can help you come out of the rain I’m in chains watching you drown In the darkness of your past Sometimes to move forward, we need to take a look back I’m here for you, I’m not afraid of the truth Tell me tell me that I’m not scared to know So we can take on what the future holds Tell me tell me I believe in you I’m not afraid, Not afraid of the truth I’m in chains watching you drown In the darkness of the past Sometimes to move forward, we need to take a look back I’m here for you, I’m not afraid, not afraid of the truth I’m not afraid, I’m not afraid of the truth
