I was only 18 just days out of school
I signed up to serve to do what I could
A boy surrounded by men with fresh blood on their hands
Carrying the weight of the Combat Infantry Badge

I had a soft spot I had always protected
I took on too much it got tough but I did what was expected
It was a tough job but I would not neglect it, my soft spot kept me connected

I carried a load more than half of my weight
The things we needed to do – shoot, move, and communicate
Old enough for a gun but too young for a drink
In hell you survive a minute at a time cause you're too tired to think

I had a soft spot I was neglecting
But when things got rough my skin had to grow tough that was expected
It was a tough job and I lost the connection
To who I was and what I was protecting

I had a friend who was about the same age
We trained and we fought we drank and we talked we gambled with our days
It was almost midnight the end of September
On the side of the road shrouded in smoke
My breath in his lungs but there was no hope
Nothing could be done he lost the chase
I'll carry this – for the rest of my days

He had a soft spot that kept us connected
We took on too much it's never enough no one's protected
