PREACHERS’ SON
Lewis McDonald / Georgia Middleman

I just wanted to…be the best that I could be
I just wanted to…be the best that I could be

My parents both were preachers
Had no time for me at all
They never came to one football game
That I can recall
So when I was in high school
And that recruiter came through
Suddenly, it occurred to me
What I had to do

I just wanted to…be the best that I could be
I just wanted to…be the best that I could be

A demolition expert
A combat engineer
I’d go ahead of my troops
To make sure the road was clear
I did 17 in the army
5 years in the Marines
And I tried to live up to those words of that
Commercial on TV

I just wanted to…be the best that I could be
I just wanted to…be the best that I could be

These days I’m helping soldiers
I couldn’t help before
When they can’t see the possibilities
I help them open that door
And when they’re on a mission
And things go from bad to worse
I say hey, it’s alright, Champ
Let’s do this one thing first

Find your dream, look at me
I’m still searching for some peace
But deep down in my soul I know
There’s a purpose here for me
I spend time with my wife and kids
I’m always learning something new
And when someone says, will you help me out?
You best believe I do

I’m just trying to be the best that I can be
I’m just trying to be the best that I can be

I hope on my tombstone
My parents write with love
Though we weren’t there for him
He was always there for us

I just wanna be the best that I can be
I just wanna be the best that I can be
