Our retreats pair professional songwriters with veterans, military families and couples, and active-duty service members to write songs about their military experiences and transition home. These field recordings were recorded on-site at a SongwritingWith:Soldiers retreat and capture a song being performed just hours after it's been written, like a song capturing its first breath.

    Participant Co-Writers:

NEVER TOGETHER Sarah and Ryan Phillips / Will Kimbrough She says I love you to infinity He says I do too When he deployed the last time They both got tattoos They dated for two weeks Got married on a Thursday afternoon It didn’t make sense but anyway They both were off work Friday For that almighty dollar’s sake Contract work took him on the road Looking out into the great unknown She took on a full course load Then he went to Afghanistan And she joined the Army Circled back to old Ft Hood Then they had a baby (A baby boy) Never together for five years straight Tell the stars above Chasing the next thing, it’s gonna be great You can’t stop true love They’re never together forever, all right Big brother, so they say Takes after his mother Then daddy got his baby girl They’re just like each other Time sure started moving fast Racing on the way time does Kids and parents scrambling round Hey baby what about us? Hey baby what about us? Never together twelve years on Tell the stars above Better days coming and it won’t be long You can’t stop true love They’re never together forever, ok Oh my Lord above look at how they’ve grown Still looking out to the great unknown Never together some folks say Tell the stars above Going back to the city, baby, come what may You can’t stop true love Never together is sometimes true When push comes to shove But those infinity tattoos Say you can’t stop true love So never ever say never, no never… Amen

The System 04:47
THE SYSTEM Eliann Carr and Justin Motley / Bonnie Bishop / Will Kimbrough I drank the kool aid in my cup in service to my nation I bore the torch of sacrifice for my generation They break you down and build you up give no congratulations I always wanted to give more, my gifts they would not take them They ghosted her when she spoke up and called them on their violence They kicked her out and met her voice with cold radio silence Now we’re a problem to them, but we will resist them Like ghosts in the machine, living through the system The system is a maze of lies, the system is a monster That eats your heart and spits it out a piece of cannon fodder We are not weak we are not beat we will not be victims We are just two soldiers trying to survive the system They poisoned and assaulted me they saw me as a problem And that’s the irony my friends my job was problem solvin’ This limbo where I’m living is not where I want to be But I’m not giving up long as a part of me is free It’s hard to keep a fairy tale alive out on a mission You can’t expect a marriage to survive love on condition They took away my son still I kept him in my heart We’re reunited now there’s so many brand new starts The things we do when we are young before we find our wisdom And some of us we find ourselves Inside of the system The system is a maze of lies, the system is a monster That eats your heart and spits it out a piece of cannon fodder We are not weak we are not beat we will not be victims We are still just soldiers caught up in the system The enemy was never to a different country born Mine have been the ones in the same uniform They saw me as just flesh alone, no mind and no heart They took and they stole until I fell apart Gone is all the glory, the honor and the pride Missing are our brothers standing side by side Left us only wounds that will not soon be healed Agony and pain is sometimes all that we feel They use you as a placeholder until you are gone Eternal disappointment in a dream that went so wrong The system is a maze of lies, the system is a monster That eats your heart and spits it out a piece of cannon fodder We are not weak we are not beat we will not be victims We’re caught up in this battle it’s a fight against the system This is not the way we would choose to live We’re forever patriots with so much more to give We are not afraid, we have suffered for our wisdom We live knowing love is stronger than the system

STRONGER TOGETHER Jolene and Ray White / JD Martin No mountain top without the climb No hardened steel without the fire Step by step, day by day So many lessons along the way Take my hand, help me through I’ll do the same when you need me to Shelter me from the storm Give me love and I’ll give you more We are strong, stronger together We are stuck together forever With love and peace and understanding We are strong, stronger together, forever We’re complicated, we have our days I wouldn’t have it any other way Moving on is what we do You plus me is worth more than two Cuz we are strong, stronger together Happily stuck together forever With love and peace and honesty We are strong, stronger together forever Cuz we are strong, stronger together Happily stuck together forever With love and peace and understanding We are strong, stronger together forever So turn the page, see what’s new I like my odds when I’m with you

EMBRACE THE SUCK Sarah and Terrance Schofield / Bonnie Bishop / JD Martin She likes a Beef on Weck And a Charlaps cone She likes the 2 tone twist With the sprinkles on He’s down to earth In his pickup truck He loves his dog Way too much These are all the things they love But the people, not so much Sometimes you’ve had enough If you love me babe I can try to change I can tolerate nearly everything But the people, the people, not so much Well it’s hard to feel When you don’t feel much Guess it’s easier To be out of touch But she’s hanging on With all her heart Cause she can see beyond The man in the dark And no doubt she loves that man And he’ll give her all he can But people not so much So let’s just embrace the suck When you love each other enough to change You can tolerate nearly everything But people, the people, not so much Oh and no doubt she loves that man And he’ll give her all he can But people not so much Outside the world is fucked The people not so much I guess sometimes you’ve just had enough But if you love me babe I can try to change I can tolerate nearly everything But people, the people, not so much

Just Because 02:31
JUST BECAUSE Eliann Carr and Justin Motley / Sarah and Ryan Phillips / Sarah and Terrance Schofield / Jolene and Ray White / Bonnie Bishop / Will Kimbrough / JD Martin Just because I feel defeated doesn’t mean I am Sometimes life is struggle til I find a way to stand I am on a journey I don’t have to know the plan Just because I feel defeated doesn’t mean I am I find inspiration gives me hope along the way Enlightenment encourages and brightens up my day Even in this sadness I can find a beat to dance Just because I feel defeated doesn’t mean I am Loneliness, anxiety All this distance Between you and me We grow and we breathe We feel pain but we see A light at the end of the tunnel Just because I feel defeated doesn’t mean I am Sometimes life is struggle til I find a way to stand I am on a journey I don’t have to know the plan Just because I feel defeated doesn’t mean I am Just because I feel defeated doesn’t mean I am
